“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this” (Isaiah 9:6-7).
We note in this marvelous passage names or designations attributed to Christ. They signify the type of character of our Lord when He would be born into this world.
Wonderful, meaning “to separate, to distinguish, or to make great.” The root of this word occurs in Psalm 78:12 where it is used to describe miracles that were performed, and those were “mighty wonders.” Our Lord is truly a wonder, i.e. wonderful. The list of things He has done for us is nothing short of wonderful.
Counselor, a term which speaks of one of “honorable rank; one who is fitted to stand near princes and kings as their advisor.” Our Lord is not only wonderful, but a Wonderful Counselor. He cares for His kingdom as King (Rev. 19:16) and priest (Heb. 2:17). Our Lord is the Great Counselor because of his unparalleled wisdom.
Mighty God, a term which affirms His deity (John 1:1-3,14). Even the Father Himself addressed the Son as God (Heb. 1:8). Jesus possesses all of the attributes of God, so rightly He truly is “the Mighty God” (cf. Titus 2:13).
Everlasting Father, signifies that our Lord is eternal (John 1:1-2). In what sense is He a Father? In the sense that He is the Father of Eternity. Forever He will care for the needs of His children.
Prince of Peace, as our Lord Himself is the true access to peace. He brings peace to us through the precious Gospel (Eph. 2:8-9; Phil. 4:7).
